A  synonym  is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language. Words that are synonyms are said to be  synonymous , and the state of being a synonym is called  synonymy . For example, the word begin, start, commence, initiate are all synonims of one another. In  linguistics ,  homonyms , broadly defined, are words which are  homographs  (words that share the same spelling, regardless of pronunciation) or  homophones  (words that share the same pronunciation, regardless of spelling), or both.  For example, according to this definition, the words  row  (propel with oars),  row  (argument) and  row  (a linear arrangement) are homonyms, as are the words  read  (peruse) and  reed  (waterside plant).
