Synonym and Homonym for Listening
A synonym is a word or phrase that
means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same
language. Words that are synonyms are said to be synonymous, and the state of being a synonym is called synonymy.
For example, the word begin,
start, commence, initiate are all synonims of one another.
In linguistics, homonyms,
broadly defined, are words which are homographs (words that share the same spelling, regardless
of pronunciation) or homophones (words that share the same pronunciation,
regardless of spelling), or both.
For example, according to
this definition, the words row (propel with oars), row (argument)
and row (a linear arrangement) are homonyms, as are the
words read (peruse) and reed (waterside
plant).
What the connection between
synonim and homonym in listening intermediate material? For some student I
think it can be their dificulty because all of these words has a same form even
same pronoun.
How to resolve this problem,
because so many words sound exactly same? So I give two ways here, first we can
use another word that has a same meaning, and second is you should know about
the content that talked about, what sentence said, what sentence mean, and you
should listen carefully.
